Okay guys, before you close out this window in disgust or apathy, do me a favor.
PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS WITH YOUR THOUGHTS.
I'm not interested in getting a DTF or anything. My hope is that everyone who comments, especially the people who dislike this design, will help me to make it the best design possible.
So let me explain my purpose with this layout. Currently, my layout of vectortea.com is very unprofessional. It says "I'm some kid with a website." I want to get away from the little kid with a website and move on to bigger and better things. I want a real portfolio that I can show clients.
The point of this layout is to put the layout in the background and instead highlight the artwork. By clicking on, "professional" for example, the entire "viewer" area will become a thumbnail gallery of my professional work.
Some other notes:
I'm considering adding a 1 px neon blue, green, red, or otherwise line at the top of every black bar (minus the 3 px ones) to increase draw to the top part of the website. However, this might be too distracting?
I also am considering removing the bottom most black bar with the copyright info. Does it make the site look too boxed in?
What do you guys think about the "about" copy? Any good? Or rework it? My idea was to keep it really, really simple because people hate reading. Nobody ever reads those about pages! Should I use some device to draw attention? How should I do the links? Do you think make them colored, or black with an underline (or otherwise)?
The font that is currently in the about copy is not ACTUAL text. It is photoshop's rendering of Arial -- chances are it will look quite a bit better when it's live on the site.
EDIT: Fixed a bunch of stuff that everyone mentioned. Will continue to work with it. Please continue dropping thoughts.
EDIT2: For all who complained about the font, hopefully it's now fixed. Nothing is being cut off (the vectortea font is just touching the white). Also new copyright bar that isn't so killer. Including tiny contact information.
EDIT3: There. I like it now. Hope you do too. I want to thank ¢mindfuckx for his great critique. Still, if you have more suggestions, keep them coming!
Remember, please critique this will a gusto. If you hated it, I want to hear why. If you loved it, I want to hear why.
Okay this is a pretty nice clean layout, like the colours you chose aswell.
Not sure about the font you used for the top "vectortea" I don't know, just doesn't work for me.
And also the top where it says "graphic design" it cuts off, I know you intended that, because i've tried doing that before, but it's hard to get right without looking cut off. If that makes sense?
For your feature part, maybe add a little text, just to let the person viewing know what they are going to be looking at instead of just the picture. For instance "This piece is by.... (Read More)" that kinda thing.
Other than that, I like this Will you be adding more to this page? It's a bit squished, but I think I like it like that, can't decide
i actually like the layout
but the only think i slightly dislike is
the fact the the viewer section is larger
than your about section.
in my personal opinion the about section
shoule be larger, making it the main focus on
your page. because it is the main thing on this.
but hey thats just me
I am unsure of the color scheme and it seems flat to me. Like most professional pages have some shading and such around the boxes or make them uneven, but lined up, to create interest.
I don't know. it is a very simple layout, but it could use a little tinkering with.
The first thing that gets is that, especially for a vector guy, the font renderings are extremely fuzzy in the title boxes. They just don't blend in with the site at all.
Also, before I forget, for the bottom bar, just do what you have, but invert it so its black text on white. Or do a faint grey so its visible, but not disctracting. Either way, doing it without the black bg will keep attention away from it. And center it.
Your title bar cutting off the text bugs the hell out of me. Maybe do some design stuff at the bottom edge to blend it a bit, and not make it so obvious that you just have large text. The ladies love large text, but not when it doesn't fit, if you catch my drift.
The top box not going all the way across the screen caught my eye as a distraction. Either get rid of the stripes, or make the box go all the way across.
The content boxes need a border of some sort. I don't know what, but stripes cutting off without reason always bugs me.
If you were to replace the 3px white with 1px neon, I think it could work well, just so long as you picked a really solid color. It would make or break the layout.
Each of the 'ersonal' boxes could use a 1px black border. I really love the thick white for the background and border, but I think a small black border would seperate the images really nicely. (As a side thought, in the actual site implimentation, I'd have it coded so that when you hover on a given box, the other two dim).
That's all for now
-- they say a man should always dress for the job he wants, so why'm I dressed up like a pirate in this restaurant? It's all because some hacker stole my identity, now i'm in here every evening serving chowder and iced tea. shoulda gone to FREECREDITR
Thanks for the input. I messed with adding some depth, but overall, I feel like the flat look is what I want to go with. To me, I think the flat looks makes the page less flashy and more art-oriented, as well as providing a unique feel that competitors do not have.
I'm fixing the fonts now. It was bothering me too. Going to increase their thickness and change the smoothing style. Looks much better now.
I just took that bottom bar out. Screw it. It made the site look like a big box anyway.
The title now does not cut off except for the very topmost and bottommost. This way it still bleeds to white, but it's not just chopped. Hopefully a suitable compromise.
As for all the other stuff, I'm going to tool around with it tomorrow after work and see what I can get going.

I also intend to move the cut off text upwards, as it appears to be giving people trouble.
As for the read more, I'll consider that too. Maybe, if anything, a title. Who knows.
